Aviani Scores Four to Lead Spokane Over Royals

September 25, 2013, Victoria, BC – The Spokane Chiefs used a four-goal performance from Michael Aviani to defeat the Victoria Royals 6-1 Wednesday evening in WHL action at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria.

In the Wednesday night clash, the Royals gave Patrik Polivka the nod in goal, while the Chiefs responded with Garret Hughson.

Luke Harrison dropped the mitts with Chiefs’ defenceman Jeremy McIntosh early in the first period to set a physical tone for the evening. The Royals applied pressure throughout the opening frame, but Spokane struck first on a late five-on-three powerplay. Jason Fram’s point shot rebounded off the end boards and Michael Aviani deposited it into the open cage at the 16:20 mark. Spokane led 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.

Brandon Fushimi was awarded a penalty shot early in the second period, but couldn’t solve Hughson. Spokane extended their lead on Aviani’s second powerplay goal of the night at the 11:56 mark. Polivka stopped the initial shot, but the puck sat in the crease before Aviani knocked it in. Mitch Holmberg added a powerplay goal at the 15:15 mark of the middle frame to give the Chiefs a 3-0 lead after two periods.

Spokane extended their lead to 5-0 on goals from Connor Chartier at the 7:39 mark and Aviani’s third goal of the game at 11:59. Luke Harrison put the home side on the board with a powerplay goal at 13:17 of the third period when he fired a wrist shot from the left face-off dot that beat Hughson short side. The Chiefs’ received a late goal from Aviani and skated away with the win. Chiefs 6 Royals 1.

Victoria went 1/4= 25.0% on the powerplay, while Spokane went 3/5= 60.0%. The Chiefs outshot the Royals 32-29.

The Royals will now head out on a four-game road trip that begins Saturday night in Kelowna at 7:05 p.m. Victoria will also make stops in Prince George and Kamloops before returning to Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on Sunday, October 6th when they host the Tri-City Americans.
