September 28, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – Velox Rugby is pleased to announce that Rob Nichol has been appointed as the new head coach for the Academy Senior Men’s team for the 2013/14 season.

Robb was born in Huntsville, ON and started playing rugby in 1997 at Twin Lakes Secondary School in Orillia, ON. As a prop he played with Twin Lakes Secondary School, Orillia Dingo’s RFC and Clifton RFC in England. Rob has extensive coaching experience, being part of the staff for different schools or clubs due to his excessive travelling due to work. But his highlights coaching have been: Carleton University, University of Western Ontario and Velox Valkyries Women’s team; Senior Men’s teams for Clifton RFC in England, Ashbury College in Ottawa and Tuggeranong Vikings in Australia. As a coach he has won the London, ON city championships with the Sir Wilfred Laurier Secondary School and with Ashbury College in Ottawa in 2006, 2012.

Robb had this to say about his coaching skill sets “I’m in my 15th year of coaching, which has taken me all over the world coaching mostly school and club sides. It’s at the grass roots level where I do my best work, helping Canadians especially grasp concepts and skills that players in other countries tend to learn naturally by playing at a young age. Last February I ran my first coaching clinic with a couple of friends, which was aimed at half backs – a vital position which doesn’t get enough developmental training at the schools level in Canada. We aimed to transfer technical and tactical knowledge to teenage scrum halves and fly halves, giving them an idea how to self assess, give positive feedback to others and use video to analyse. We also aimed this at the coaches who were invited to attend as well, feeling coach development is key to improving rugby in Canada. I have also started mentoring a few coaches in my home town who are in charge of a college men’s team. It was great being able to share what I know and see rapid development in their abilities.”

When asked about his philosophy for the upcoming Velox academy men’s team this season; “With the two teams, adopting a “let’s just play rugby” approach. We will threw out fancy plays and systems, simply aimed to exploit and create space to set up team mates – and, above all, have fun. Seeing growth in each individual and knowing that they enjoy coming to training is all I aim for as a coach and what I strive to facilitate.” Robs favorite rugger memory was nailing a sweetly struck convert in a final game in England, having even the away fans applaud applauding him, hearing one say: “I’ve never seen someone with a 3 on his back do that!

Weekend Schedule
