Vikes secure Barnard Cup home field advantage with win over Velox

September 28, 2013, Victoria, BC – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s rugby team defeated Velox Valhalians 44-19 Saturday, Sept. 28 at Velox Rugby Club. UVic scored their opening try just minutes into the match and never looked back.

Several different Vikes tallied in Saturday’s victory, the third in the opening round of the Barnard Cup competition. Kane Wyatt, Doug Fraser and Jamie Mackenzie combined for five tries while Guiseppe du Toit, in his second match with the Vikes converted seven of eight attempts. UVic opened the game with 27 straight points before Velox finally got on the board near halftime. The first half would end with the Vikes in firm control of the match at 27-7.

The Vikes continued to post points in the second half with du Toit draining one through the uprights to begin play. Midway through the half Jamie Mackenzie gave the home crowd a showcase of his skillset as he bolted through several defenders en route to a try of his own. The Vikes offense continued to connect, pushing the score up to 44-7 before Velox fought back with two late tries before the final whistle blew.

With the victory, the Vikes secure home field advantage for the Barnard Cup finals, taking place November 30.
