Royals blanked by Cougars

October 1, 2013, Prince George, BC – In a Tuesday night matchup at the CN Centre, the Victoria Royals took on the host Prince George Cougars in the first of two back-to-back games. The Royals gave Coleman Vollrath the start in net, while the Cougars countered with Ty Edmonds.

Prince George opened the scoring 1:07 into the first period as Zach Pochiro put a wrist shot through the pads of Vollrath from the right wing. The Royals controlled the play throughout the opening frame, but the Cougars increased their lead late in the period. Klarc Wilson banged in a rebound at the 18:42 mark to send Prince George into the first intermission with a 2-0 advantage.

Victoria peppered the Cougars’ netminder early in the second period, but Edmonds held his ground in goal. Tempers began to flare late in the frame as Ben Walker and Pochiro engaged in a spirited scrap with five minutes to play. The Royals continued to press for their first goal of the game, but Prince George held their two-goal lead after 40 minutes of play.

Victoria was unable to strike early in the final stanza and looked to cut into the lead in the dying moments of the game. Victoria threw a flurry of shots at the Prince George net, but the Cougars held on to preserve the win. Cougars 2 Royals 0.
