October 2, 2013, PRINCE GEORGE, BC – In a Wednesday night contest at the CN Centre in Prince George, the Victoria Royals concluded a two-game set with the Cougars.
Victoria started Patrik Polivka in net, while Prince George answered with Ty Edmonds. The Royals controlled the play early in a defensively strong first period. Austin Carroll and Martin Bobos dropped the gloves at the 10:35 mark to set the game’s physical tone. Carroll earned the decision and Victoria continued to push for the opening goal, but it remained scoreless after 20 minutes of play.
Ben Walker opened the scoring for Victoria at the 8:40 mark of the second frame with a shorthanded goal. Walker forced a turnover at his own blue line and flew in alone on a breakaway. The Edina, MN native made a move to his forehand and slid the puck past Edmond’s outstretched glove. Tempers continued to flare and Royals’ rookie Regan Nagy later squared off with Cougars’ defenceman Zach Gonek in his first career WHL fight. After two periods, Victoria held a 1-0 advantage.
The Royals had multiple chances to extend their lead to begin the final frame, but the visitors were unable to put a second goal past Edmonds. In the dying moments of the game and with Prince George pressing for the equalizer, the Cougars called a timeout and pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker with 1:20 remaining. Polivka stood tall in the final moments for Victoria, denying every Prince George shot en route to his first shutout of the season and a Royals victory. Royals 1 Cougars 0.
Victoria went 0/3=0.0% on the powerplay, while Prince George also went 0/3=0.0%. The Cougars outshot the Royals 28-24.
Victoria will now travel to Kamloops to face the Blazers on Friday night and complete a four-game road trip. The Royals return to Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on Sunday, October 6th when they host the Tri-City Americans for a 1:05 p.m. afternoon start.
