October 2, 2013, PORTLAND – The Portland Winterhawks (3-1-0-1) picked up a 6-4 win over the previously unbeaten Spokane Chiefs (4-1-0-0) Wednesday in front of 4,605 fans at the Moda Center.

The Hawks opened the game with an offensive explosion, scoring four times in the first nine minutes. The barrage started 3:10 into the game when Nic Petan took a feed from Alex Schoenborn behind the net and buried it for a 1-0 lead. After Spokane tied it just under a minute later on a goal by Riley Whittingham, the Hawks came back with two goals from Schoenborn and one from Oliver Bjorkstrand in a span of just 2:09 to take a 4-1 lead before the period was halfway through.

It remained 4-1 until the 10:19 mark of the second when Spokane’s Blair Oneschuk scored shorthanded to cut Portland’s lead to 4-2, which remained the score going into the third.

Midway through the third with the Hawks on a power play, Bjorkstrand scored his second of the game to make it a 5-2 lead. The Chiefs got within a goal late in the game when Connor Chartier and Jason Fram scored consecutive power play goals to cut Portland’s lead to 5-4. With Chiefs within one and netminder Garret Hughson on the bench for an extra attacker, Petan sealed the victory with an empty net goal and the 6-4 Hawks win.

Petan added two assists to finish with four points, while Schoenborn added an assist to his two goals to total three points.

Brendan Burke earned the win in net with 27 saves on 31 shots. Hughson gave up five goals on 38 shots, with Portland adding the empty net tally.

The Hawks hit the road or a pair of games Friday and Saturday in Kelowna against the Rockets.
