October 4, 2013, SASKATCHEWAN, AB. – The Universities of Saskatchewan and Alberta meet in a battle for the Canada West Prairie Division lead in men’s soccer Saturday and Sunday on Field 7.

Saskatchewan (5-3-0) sits first in the Canada West Prairie Division with 15 points, just one ahead of Alberta (4-1-2). The top three teams in each division qualify for playoffs.
Huskie third-year striker Brett Levis enters the weekend as the Canada West Second Star. He scored two goals in a weekend split with UBC and Trinity Western.
Saskatchewan went 5-2-1 at home in 2012 and has started 2-1 on Field 7 this season.
Vancouver Whitecaps FC club ambassador Carl Valentine will be in Saskatoon at the Saturday match. He will work with players in the Whitecaps FC Academy Centre Skills and Prospects Academy prior to the match on Saturday on Field 7.
Valentine is a Vancouver native who won the 1979 NASL Soccer Bowl with the Whitecaps. He also played in Canada’s only appearance in the World Cup in 1986 in Mexico. On Friday, October 4, Valentine will put on a demonstration for Whitecaps FC Skills Academy players and parents players from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Education Gym on the University of Saskatchewan campus. On Saturday, October 5, the ‘Caps legend will work with the Academy’s Prospects players at the men’s soccer outdoor field. The schedule includes U-10 Prospects from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m., U-12 Prospects from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., and U-14 Prospects from 12 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. local time.
Since 2009, the Huskies are 1-4-2 against Alberta with all but one game ending in a one goal differential. In the two 2012 meetings between the rivals, the Golden Bears took a 2-1 win before tying 1-1 on October 6-7 in Edmonton.
UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS (4-1-2)
Alberta, who held on to first place in the Canada West prairie division until a tough weekend road trip in B.C., will look to rebound against Saskatchewan this weekend. The No. 6 ranked Golden Bears took just one point in a two match road trip through B.C. tying the Trinity Western Spartans and losing 4-0 to the UBC Thunderbirds. Prior to the trip, Alberta was on a four match winning streak.
Marcus Johnstone leads the Golden Bears with four goals, while CJ Gilroy and Jermeie Campbell each have two.
Keeper Jay Vetsch has played in all seven matches for Alberta making 22 saves and posting four shutouts.
UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES (5-3-0)
Saskatchewan jumped into first place in the division after splitting the weekend series road trip through B.C.
Saskatchewan lost 3-2 to the No. 2 ranked UBC Thunderbirds before winning 3-1 over the Trinity Western Spartans. The Huskies were in the match with UBC until a goal in the 88th minute lifted the T-Birds.
Brett Levis leads the Huskies with five goals including scoring two in the weekend series. For his efforts, he was named the Canada West Second Star of the Week. Luigi Bekwayo has also been strong with four goals and one assist.
Michal Bandula has started all eight matches in 2013, making 27 saves with three shutouts.
