Royals edged by Blazers

October 4, 2013, Kamloops, BC – In a Wednesday night match-up at Interior Savings Centre, the Victoria Royals went up against the Kamloops Blazers.

The Royals gave Patrik Polivka the start in goal, while the Blazers responded with Bolton Pouliot.

Kamloops struck first on a goal from Aaron Macklin at the 5:54 mark. Joe Kornelsen’s wraparound attempt bounced into the slot before Macklin deposited it into an open net. Tyson Ness later doubled the Blazers’ lead at the 17:00 mark of the opening frame when he slid a backhanded effort underneath Polivka’s right pad from the top of the crease. Kamloops held the 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

The Royals came out flying in the second period as Logan Nelson notched a powerplay goal just 22 seconds into the frame. Nelson walked down to the edge of the left face-off circle before he snapped a shot high over Pouliot’s glove. Victoria continued to push the pace which resulted in a powerplay goal from Joe Hicketts at the 4:21 mark. Hicketts let a wrist shot go from the right corner that eluded Pouliot and slipped past the far post. The Blazers regained the lead on Ness’ second goal of the game at 13:11 and Kamloops took a 3-2 lead into the second intermission.

The Royals tied the game on a goal by Austin Carroll just 1:33 into the third period. Carroll’s wrist shot from behind the net banked off the right skate of Pouliot and in to level the score. The Blazers responded at the 12:22 mark when Tim Bozon converted while shorthanded. Victoria put pressure on Kamloops when they pulled Polivka for the extra attacker with less than one minute to play, but the visitors were unable to put a goal past Pouliot for the equalizer. Blazers 4 Royals 3.

Victoria went 2/7=28.6% on the powerplay, while Kamloops went 0/3=0.0%. The Royals outshot the Blazers 33-23.

The Royals will now return to Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre to begin a five-game home stand on Sunday, October 6th when they host the Tri-City Americans. Puck drop on Sunday is scheduled for an afternoon start of 1:05 p.m.
