October 5, 2013, KINGSTON, Ont. – The UOIT women’s hockey team opened their 2013/14 OUA regular season up with a 2-1 overtime victory over the Queen’s Gaels in Kingston on Friday night.

Senior defenceman Melissa Berney (Bowmanville, Ont.) scored the game-winner 2:18 in the overtime period, giving the Ridgebacks the opening night victory. Jill Morillo (Whitby, Ont.) and Victoria MacKenzie (Toronto, Ont.) had assists on the goal.

“The team was able to fight back,” said UOIT head coach Karen Nystrom. “Each period we continued to get stronger and showed determination to get the two points.”

Although the Ridgebacks earned the win, they did not get off to a great start as they were outshot 10-3 in the first period and trailed by one goal. Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) scored for Queen’s on the power play midway through the period.

In the second, UOIT would turn up their intensity as they managed to tie the game just 1:33 into the period. Sam Forchielli (Hamilton, Ont.) scored with assists from Sarah Worthington (Whitby, Ont.) and Zoe Battie (Nanaimo, BC).

Making her OUA debut, Tori Campbell (Lethbridge, Alta.) made 26 saves in the win. Despite giving up the opening goal, the Ridgebacks penalty killing unit did a great job of limiting Queen’s scoring opportunities they went 1-for-8 on the power play. UOIT was 1-for-5 with the man advantage.

UOIT fired 26 shots on veteran goaltender Mel Dodd-Moher, who stopped 24 in the loss.

UOIT joins Laurier and Toronto as teams who won their season opener.

The Ridgebacks will now head to Toronto to take on the Varsity Blues on Saturday, October 5. Puck drop is at 4 p.m.
