October 5, 2013, VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes women’s rugby squad contested in their final Canada West regular season game against UBC, Oct. 5 at Wallace Field.

UBC captured the lead early and did not surrender it, rolling to a 63-17 victory.

Following last weekend’s disappointing losses, the Vikes were aiming to finish the season on a high note, but the injury-laden squad could not overcome a UBC team that was looking for their first win of the season and a berth in the Canada West playoffs.

Under sunny and clear conditions, UBC opened the game with a try from Annie Arnott. Costly mistakes on opening possessions for the Vikes were the difference between the two teams. A score for UVic’s Tiffany Picketts did little to gain the home team any momentum, falling behind 27-5 at the half.

“We started the game by turning the first six balls over to them,” said head coach Mark Hall. “We’re two evenly matched teams, but you start making mistakes and you give them confidence.”

The second half continued to flow in UBC’s favour, with the visiting team opening the second half with another try at the ten-minute mark before further padding the lead with yet another try minutes later. Midway thorough the half, Vike Alya Govorchin would post the Vikes second try of the game, breaking up the right side of the field and refusing to go down to give her side 10 points. UBC’s Cat Ohler was the standout player on the field Saturday, scoring two tries, five conversions and a penalty goal in the match.

Late in the half, Laura Crowe-Hutchon would break up the left side of the field, before passing it to Jasmyn Niquidet who would run it in for the try. The three Vikes scores would not affect the outcome of the game however, as the women would finish their regular season finale with a 63-17 loss and 1-3 Canada West record for the 2013 season.
