October 6, 2013, – VICTORIA, BC. – The Victoria Cougars (9-0-0-0) put their unbeaten streak on the line when they entertain the Westshore Wolves (5-5-1-1) this afternoon.

Game time at the Archie Browning Sports Centre, located at 1151 Esquimalt Road, is 3:30 p.m.

This afternoon’s game marks the second of eight meetings between the two division rivals.

Four weeks ago, Victoria blasted the Wolves 10-0. Blake Roney scored three times while David Marshall, Ryan Carson, Jordan Davie, Michael Fretz, Wade Johnson, and Mark Walton each added singles.

Connor Beauchamp stopped all 18 shots he faced.

The Cougars, who led 2-0 after one period and 6-0 after two, went 3-for-13 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.

Nick Dueck got the start in net for Westshore but was pulled at the 16:03 mark of the second period after allowing five goals on 24 shots. Matt Chester came on in relief and made 11-of-16 saves.

The Cougars extended their win streak to nine games following an 8-2 blasting of the Oceanside Generals last Thursday.

Carson and Marshall led the onslaught with a pair of goals. Also lighting the lamp were Cam MacKay, Fretz, Walton, and Roney.

Backup goalie Nathan Hargrave turned aside 15 shots for his second win of the season.

Graham Zagrodney, who had three assists in the game, leads all defensemen with 15 points and now sits tied for ninth place in league scoring. The Summerland, B.C. native led all defensemen with 40 points last year.

Victoria’s power play has been steadily improving since Opening Day. It now sits No. 1 in the nine-team Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League – converting on 29.8 percent of its chances.

The Cougars received a big boost to their blue line last game with the re-signing of Robert Zadra. Hard-nosed, strong, and tough-as-nails are words to describe the 19-year-old defenseman.

Westshore has not won back-to-back games all season.

This afternoon, Rob Doyle and his troops will try to get back on track after dropping a 5-3 decision to the Peninsula Panthers last Friday.

Kyle Peterson, Hobin Zinck, and Connor Krupa scored for the Wolves who led 2-1 after one period. Chester took his fifth loss of the season after surrendering four goals on 29 shots.

Kayle Ramsay, who posted 44 points in 42 games for Westshore last year, had an assist in his season debut against his former club.

Suddenly, Peterson is a godsend. Since being acquired from the Kerry Park Islanders five games ago, Peterson has posted four goals and four assists. Surprisingly, he only has two penalty minutes with his new team.

Krupa is on a seven game point streak while Brett Lervold and Peterson each have points in their last five games.

Lervold continues to lead all scorers in the VIJHL with 22 points.

The Wolves, along with Oceanside, lead the league in games played at 12.
