October 6, 2013, SASKATCHEWAN – Recording goals on a free kick and a penalty kick in a 2-1 victory, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies completed a sweep of the visiting No. 6 ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears Sunday afternoon on Field 7 in PotashCorp Park in Saskatoon.

Huskies’ leading scorer Brett Levis converted in the 65th minute on a free kick from 19-yards out. His ball sailed into the bottom left corner to notch the match at one. David Brown tallied the game winner on a penalty kick seven minutes later after a Saskatchewan player was tripped in the box.

With the win, Saskatchewan improves to 7-3-0 on the season. Alberta drops to 4-3-2 with the loss. The sweep gave the Huskies, who won 2-0 a day earlier, a seven point lead for first place over the Golden Bears in the Canada West prairie division standings. The sweep was the first for the Huskies over Alberta since 2000.

Nio Saler gave the Golden Bears the lead in the 52nd minute on a penalty kick of his own after Tolu Esan was hauled down just inside the box. Saler’s shot slid into the right side of the net passed an outstretched Michal Bandula.

Both Saskatchewan and Alberta had prime chances to break the scoreless tie in the first half. Luigi Bekwayo missed a penalty shot in the 35th minute after Levis was hauled down in front of the goal. At the other end of the pitch, Alberta had two swats at a free kick by Moe Teliani and Saler that were stopped. The Golden Bears also had a good chance on a corner kick that was blocked by Mitch Bauche.

Bandula made four saves in the winning effort, while Alberta keeper Jay Vetsch stopped seven for the Golden Bears. The Huskies outshot the Golden Bears 22-15.

The Huskies remain at home to face the Victoria Vikes and Fraser Valley Cascades next weekend for the final matches of the season in Saskatoon, while Alberta will play the same teams on opposite days.
