October 6, 2013, KELOWNA, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team finished their four game tour through Kamloops and Kelowna with a straight set win over the UBC Okanagan Heat Sunday afternoon in Kelowna, B.C.
The Spartans improved to 7-1 in preseason play with the 25-19, 25-23, 25-20 win, while the Heat remain winless at 0-5.
“Our play was pretty good overall. Our blocking technique was off and we were a little sloppy, but we sided-out really well and our offensive efficiency was really great,” commented TWU head coach Ben Josephson. “We are happy to get through the trip 4-0 and were heading home for some rest and get ready for UBC.”
The Spartans were led by second year outside hitter Ryan Sclater (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) with 12 kills six digs and four blocks and fourth year middle Branden Schmidt (Winton, Alta.) with eight kills, three blocks and three digs. TWU first year setter Adam Schriemer (Winnipeg) ran the Spartans offence and finished the match with 34 set assists.
Leading the way for the Heat were Nate Speijer with nine kills and five digs and Josh Harvey with eight kills and two blocks.
Next up for the Spartans are the UBC Thunderbirds on Thursday, October 10, 2013. TWU and UBC will match up for the second time this preseason at Yale high school in Abbotsford, B.C. Match time is set for 7 p.m. The Spartans won the first meeting, September 24, 3-1 at Fleetwood Park high school in Surrey, B.C.
TWU kicks off the 2013-14 Canada West season on Oct. 25 when they will host the University of British Columbia at 8 p.m. PST at the Langley Events Centre.
