October 7, 2013, OTTAWA, ON – CARHA Hockey is proud to announce that Windsor, Ontario has been selected as the Host City for the 2016 CARHA Hockey World Cup.

The world renowned CARHA Hockey World Cup is organized every four years in a select Canadian city, and is an event that attracts participants from all across Canada, the United States, and Europe. From April 3rd – 10th of 2016, over 120 adult recreational hockey teams from more than 15 countries will travel to Windsor for this week long event. The event has been labeled the “Olympics” of rec hockey and since its inception it has grown to be the largest international adult rec hockey tournament in the world.

The 2016 CARHA Hockey World Cup will mark the sixth time the event has been hosted in a select Canadian city. Previous Host Cities include Toronto (1996), Vancouver (2000), Ottawa (2004), Quebec City (2008), and Sault Ste. Marie (2012). The 2012 CARHA Hockey World Cup was a Finalist for Sport Event of the Year from the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance (CSTA). This edition of the event generated $13.3M for the City of Sault Ste. Marie and it is expected that the impact for Windsor will exceed $15M.

“We are looking forward to building on the success we saw in Sault Ste. Marie by bringing our participants a memorable experience in Windsor in 2016” said Reuben Greenspoon, Coordinator, CARHA Hockey World Cup. “The City of Windsor has some world class facilities and amenities which will make for a great event in 2016. Another big factor in Windsor’s winning bid was their great hockey community that we know will embrace and celebrate our participants.”

Windsor has a rich hockey history and was selected from 37 communities that had demonstrated interest across Canada as the 2016 Host City after an extensive and competitive bid process. The City of Windsor has world class accommodations and hockey facilities that will be utilized throughout the seven days of the event. Participants from around the world will fill more than 800 hotel rooms per night and will play more than 250 games in the community throughout the week. In addition, local restaurants, pubs, shops and malls can expect positive spinoff with an influx of out of town traffic during the event!

“We are extremely excited and honoured to be able to host over 120 hockey teams from 15 plus countries – the largest international adult recreational hockey tournament in the world, the 2016 CARHA Hockey World Cup. It’s impossible to ignore that our region is becoming an overwhelmingly popular sports tourism destination,” said Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis. “Just look at what we’ve hosted and will host – from multiple Hocktoberfests to the International Children’s Games in August to the Ontario 55+ Games in 2014 and the FINA short-course international swimming championships in 2016. Our reputation is travelling throughout the world every time we roll out the red carpet to organizers and athletes alike.”
