Bears hockey, T-Birds men’s soccer, Pandas rugby rank #1

October 8, 2013, EDMONTON (ISN) – The Alberta Golden Bears men’s hockey team opens 2013-14 ranked #1 in CIS, while UBC jumps to the top in men’s soccer and Alberta Pandas rugby remains #1.

The defending Canada West champion University of Alberta Golden Bears men’s hockey team opens 2013-14 ranked #1 in Canadian Interuniversity Sport, while the UBC Thunderbirds jump to the top in men’s soccer and the Alberta Pandas rugby team remains #1 after conclusion of the regular season this past weekend.

The Golden Bears hockey team got off to a great start with two straight shutout victories this past weekend. The Calgary Dinos (2-0-0) open at #4 and the #6 Saskatchewan Huskies, host of the March 2014 PotshCorp University Cup, are 1-1-0 after the opening weekend.

Regina is the top Canada West women’s hockey team, coming in at #5, while #7 Calgary and #10 UBC also make the grade.

The UBC men’s soccer squad has won eight consecutive matches and sits 9-1-0 overall, first in the Pacific Division of Canada West. Saskatchewan (7-3-0) is #8 and the Victoria Vikes (6-2-0) #10.

In women’s soccer, Alberta (8-0-2) is the top-ranked Canada West school, undefeated and ranked #2 in the nation. #6 UBC (5-0-3) and #7 Saskatchewan (6-1-2) complete a trio of Canada West teams to make the Top 10.

Alberta’s rugby team completed a 4-0-0 season and head to the conference tournament as the #1 seed in two weeks, with #8 Calgary, #10 Lethbridge Pronghorns and Victoria Vikes joining them at the event.
