October 8, 2013, LANGLEY, B.C. (ISN) – Trinity Western men’s hockey forward J.P. Villeneuve (Georgetown, Ont.) was named the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League’s Player of the Week for the week ending October 6th.

Villeneuve helped engineer a third period comeback on Friday night that gave the Spartans a win in their regular season opener on the road in Kamloops.

With TWU trailing 3-2 midway through the frame, Villeneuve set up linemate Chris Hirano for his second goal of the game to square things up at 3-3. And with just 1:29 to play in regulation, the 21-year old won a battle on the side board in the WolfPack zone and beat netminder Stephen Wolff for the game winner.

The victory was the first for the Spartans in a BCIHL opener since 2010, when they defeated the University of the Fraser Valley by a 5-4 score on home ice. Friday’s win was also the first for new head coach Barret Kropf.

Runners up for this week’s award include Selkirk College forward Connor McLaughlin, Selkirk College forward Cody Fidgett, and Thompson Rivers University forward Duncan Schulz.
