Men’s sitting volleyball team set to compete at the Pan Am Championships

October 9, 2013 OTTAWA (ISN) – Volleyball Canada’s men’s sitting team is on its way to Edmond, Oklahoma, to compete in the 2013 ParaVolley Pan American Sitting Volleyball Zonal Championships.

“As a team we have not competed since last April when we played a series of exhibition matches against the U.S. at the Defi Sportif in Montreal, and are looking forward to the challenge of competing again against the top teams in our zone,” said Team Canada Head Coach Ray Sewell. “We are coming off of two strong training camps and feel that we are prepared to challenge for one of the two berths for World Championships.”

The event runs from Oct. 10 to 13 at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Oklahoma, and Canada, the U.S. and Brazil are challenging for two spots at 2014 World Championships in Elbag, Poland in June 2014.

Canada’s team captain is Austin Hinchey, who has been released from the UBC Thunderbirds Men’s Volleyball for this event.

“We are really excited for the Pan Am Championships this weekend,” said Hinchey of Edmonton, AB. “We’ve improved a lot in practice over the last year and it will be nice to play in an official international setting game again. We are also looking forward to being back at the University of Central Oklahoma, which is a familiar venue for our team.”

The team will be led by veterans Hinchey and Jose Rebelo, but the roster also consists of five athletes who have not competed in an international competition.

“It will be great for these athletes to experience international competition and learn from the veterans of the program,” said coach Sewell.
