October 10, 2013, VICTORIA (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes women’s basketball team have a five-game pre-season schedule in McKinnon Gym beginning this weekend, Oct. 12, hosting the George Fox University Bruins at 7 p.m.
Former Vike and CIS national champion Dani Sinclair begins her first CIS campaign as head coach of the Vikes after spending last year as the interim head coach.
Last season the Vikes held an impressive 9-2 record in McKinnon gym and were 16-6 overall in regular season play. The contributions of now-graduated seniors Debbie Yeboah and Chelsea McMullen will be missed for the upcoming season and Sinclair will look to a new group of leaders including returnees Cassandra Goodis, Jessica Renfrew, Jenny Lewis and Jenna Bugiardini.
Bugiardini was crowned the 2012-13 Canada West Rookie of the Year, named to the CIS All-Rookie team and awarded the UVic Female Rookie of the Year award. Meanwhile, Renfrew and Goodis will be the new duo to lead the Vikes contingency as the pair were regular starters last year and have three seasons of CIS basketball under their belt. Also returning to the fold is fourth-year forward Sarah Semeniuk who was off for a season due to injury.
New faces to the mix include international recruit Mikaela Turik (Sydney, Asutralia) who announced her committment to the Vikes in 2011 but will have her first opportunity to put on a Vikes jersey this weekend. The six-foot-one forward is known for her basketball talents but was also a star cricket player on the Canadian national women’s team. A dual citizen of Australia and Canada, Turik’s grandmother graduated from Victoria’s Teacher’s College and her dad was born in Trail, B.C.
The Vikes will also have fresh faces in rookies Emily Jentsch (Summerland, B.C.) and Jordan Christie (Barrie, Ont.), while returnees Jenna Krug, Shaylyn Crisp, Ashley McGinnis and Nicole Karstein are likely to see more floor time.
The Vikes begin their pre-season this weekend, Oct. 12, against the George Fox Bruins, who visit the Vikes from Newberg, Ore. The Bruins compete in the West Division of the NCAA Division III and are led by head coach Michael Meek, in his fourth season. In 2012-13 the Bruins has a 12-4 record and lost in the opening round of their post-season. Leading George Fox is junior Jami Roos who averaged 10.8 points per game and senior Megan Arnoldy who averaged 10.3 points per game. The Bruins will miss the height and talents of post Hannah Munger who graduates after boasting an average of 11.6 points per game as well as 5.8 rebounds per game.
The Vikes and Bruins tip off at 7 p.m. on Oct. 12 at McKinnon Gym. The game will be webcast live with no commentary at http://uvic.canadawest.tv and will include live stats.
