October 11, 2013, VICTORIA (ISN) – Senior Terrell Evans led the University of Victoria Vikes men’s basketball team to a 102-94 win over the Concordia Cavaliers on Oct. 11 at the UBC Invitational tournament hosted at War Memorial Gym in Vancouver, B.C. The Vikes advance their pre-season record to 2-0 thanks to Evans’ 37-point performance.
Not only did Evans contribute heavily on the scoreboard but the fifth-year forward went nearly perfect from the line and chipped in with nine rebounds. Also hitting double digits was Chris McLaughlin, Kyle Peterson and Marcus Tibbs. Peterson and Tibbs each made good on three shots from beyond the arc.
Concordia were led in scoring by both Adam Herman and Thomas Pierce, who contributed 30 and 24 points, respectively. Pierce also added six rebounds and was 11-for-11 from the field, while Herman added eight rebounds.
The Cavaliers stayed on scoring pace with the Vikes who finished the first quarter with a close 22-20 lead. The Vikes took a six-point edge on the Cavaliers midway through after back-to-back-to-back treys from each of Reiner Theil, Tibbs and Evans.
In the second quarter Concordia played catch up after Marquis Matthews made a key lay up to bring the score to 27-26 for the Vikes. Theil hit another shot from distance that Concordia’s Willy Ligon responded to as the Vikes managed to grip on for the 45-42 tilt at the half-time break.
Entering the third the Vikes and Cavaliers entertained each other, trading buckets but the Vikes started to find their scoring ways as Peterson made good on a three pointer right after Evans converted from the line for a three-point play. Up by nine, the Vikes continued through the quarter to edge the Cavaliers by as much as 14. Pierce drained a free throw to convert a three-point play of his own as the Cavaliers trailed 69-61 entering the last frame.
Closing out the game the Vikes held as much as a 15-point lead to finish the Cavaliers off by a score of 102-94. The Vikes won the battle under the boards 36-27 and tallied 50 points in the paint.
