Story and Photographs by Glenn Ivens – ISNOctober 12, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – Logan Nelson tallied his 5th goal of the season with just over a minute to play in the 3rd period to give the Victoria Royals 4-3 win and the two game series sweep of the Lethbridge Hurricanes in WHL action at Save On Foods Memorial Centre on Saturday night.
The story of the game though was the outstanding play of Hurricanes netminder Corbin Boes. The Royals peppered 49 (17-21-11) shots at Boes and he stood tall and kept his team in the game till the final minute.

Victoria opened the scoring at 1:46 of the 1st period when Ben Walker fired a shot from the right face off circle that beat Boes low on the glove side. Assists went to brother Jack Walker and Chaz Reddekopp.
The Hurricanes answered back at 6:43 when Ryan Pilon gathered a puck in the slot and beat a screened Patrick Polivka over the blocker. Despite the majority of play taking place inside the Lethbridge blue line the teams went into the 1st break tied 1-1.

Lethbridge would take the 2-1 lead when Tyler Wong bulged the twine on the power play just over 2 minutes in the 2nd period. The Royals big man Keegan Kanzig scored his first of the season, a cannon of a wrist shot from the point that eluded all the bodies in front and found the back of the net, to knot the game at 2-2.

The Hurricanes would come out pumped up in the 3rd and once again take the lead of a Sam Mckechnie goal half way through the period. Victoria would press and it paid off with a power play goal from Joe Hicketts, his 4th of the season, to tie the game a 3-3.

With the clock winding down, it looked like the teams would be headed to overtime, but a late surge from the Royals saw Nelson play Johnny on the Spot and gather a rebound at the side of the net and bury it for the winner.
Boes was named the game 1st star for his fine performance in the crease, Ben Walker took the 2nd star and Keegan Kanzig earned the 3rd star.
With the win the Royals extend their winning streak to 3 game will be looking to add to that on Monday afternoon when the host the Prince George Cougars at 1:05pm.
