October 12, 2013, VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s basketball team went 3-0 at this year’s UBC Invitational Tournament in Vancouver after tonight’s win over Wilfrid Laurier. The final score of 91-72 was the third victory for the new-look Vikes who also found wins over the Concordia Cavaliers and Concordia Stingers on previous nights.
The Vikes received heavy contributions from their more senior players including 20 points from Terrell Evans, 19 points from Reiner Theil and 18 points from Chris McLaughlin. The Vikes shot 56 per cent from the field and were over 80 per cent from the line.
For the Golden Hawks, Will Coulthard led in scoring with 20 points and Max Allin and Jack Simmons contributed with 16 and 11 points, respectively. The Golden Hawks impressed from distance making good on 10 of 23 three-point shots but were held to 37 per cent from the field.
The Vikes broke away in the first quarter of play gaining as much as a 14-point advantage after Evans and McLaughlin found their scoring groove early. Entering the second quarter the Vikes grabbed a 29-19 lead despite a late three-point attempt from Owen Coulthard.
The Vikes continued to push their lead, dominating on a series of free throws from Reiner Theil, who chipped in eight points in the second quarter. Max Allin made good on two attempts from the beyond the arc but it wasn’t enough as the Vikes led 51-33 entering the half-time break.
In the final frames the Vikes continued to out-play the Golden Hawks pushing a dominating 73-49 lead at the end of the third on route to a final score of 91-72. The Vikes found success under the boards, totally 32 defensive rebounds to Wilfried Laurier’s 14.
Up next the Vikes will return home to start their preparation work for the Carleton House-Laughton Tournament, set for Oct. 18-20. The No. 1 Carleton Ravens will host the tournament at the Raven’s Nest in Ottawa, Ont. The Vikes will face Bishop’s, Lakehead and the Ravens on Oct. 18, 19 and 20, respectively.
