October 14, 2013, Victoria (ISN) – In a Monday afternoon clash at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, the Victoria Royals hosted the Prince George Cougars in the first of a two-game set. The Royals gave Patrik Polivka the start between the pipes, while the Cougars responded with Brett Zarowny.

Logan Nelson got the home crowd on their feet converting on an odd man rush just 2:32 into the first period. Nelson received Brandon Fushimi’s cross ice pass at the left faceoff circle and wired it past an outstretched Zarowny.

The Cougars’ best chance in the frame came when forward Alex Forsberg wristed a loose puck at a wide open net, but Victoria defender Keegan Kanzig slid down for the timely shot block. The Royals took a 2-0 lead on a powerplay goal from Austin Carroll with 40 seconds remaining. Nelson and Brandon Magee both rang shots off the post before Carroll jumped on the loose puck, and banged it in past a sprawled out Zarowny. Victoria held a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

Tensions hit a boiling point in the middle frame as Taylor Crunk laid a big hit on a Cougars’ player and then dropped the gloves with Peter Kosterman in a spirited tilt. Both teams exchanged powerplay opportunities, with the Royals killing off three minor penalties, but both netminders came up with key saves to keep the period scoreless. After 40 minutes, Victoria led 2-0.

The hostilities from the middle frame spilled over into the final period. Fushimi squared off against Zach Gonek in a fight that reignited the home crowd. Prince George pulled the goalie for the extra attacker late, but Nelson scored his second goal of the night into the vacated net. Polivka held on the rest of the way and turned aside all 24 shots he faced for his league-leading third shutout of the season. Royals 3 Cougars 0.
