Victoria to help The Mustard Seed

October 15, 2013, Victoria (ISN) – The Victoria Royals are pleased to announce the club’s sponsorship of The Mustard Seed’s Great Canadian Food Fight 2013. The 48-hour national food drive marathon will begin on Thursday, October 17th at 6:00 p.m. and donations will be accepted at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.

The Royals and The Mustard Seed will collect non-perishable food and financial donations until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 19th in an effort to be crowned the national Great Canadian Food Fight champion. Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre will serve as one of three locations in Victoria that will collect the donations in Victoria’s bid to win the national title and help The Mustard Seed to provide food hampers for more than 7,000 people each month.

Members of the media are invited to Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, October 16th for an official event kick-off ceremony detailing the Victoria Royals’ partnership with The Mustard Seed in the Great Canadian Food Fight. Members of team management as well as coaching staff and players will be available to speak to the media and refreshments will be provided.

The Victoria Royals and The Mustard Seed will also co-host a Chamber of Commerce mixer at Save-On-Foods Memorial from 3:30-9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16th. Those wishing to participate in the mixer are encouraged to bring their donations to the event and stay for a hockey game as the Royals will host the Prince George Cougars at 7:05 p.m.

Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre will act as one of three locations in Victoria that will collect donations of cash and non-perishable food items. Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre will also play host to a celebrity pie throwing event on Friday, October 18th between 12:00-1:00 p.m. Members of the public can make donations to throw pies at local business and community leaders from The Chamber, The City of Victoria, Victoria International Airport, Tourism Victoria, The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority and other organizations.

Donations can also be made during the 48-hour window at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Those wishing to donate can also visit The Mustard Seed itself at 625 Queens Avenue or visit www.mustardseed.ca.

The Mustard Seed has been helping people living in poverty since 1975. The programs and services of The Mustard Seed are 100 per cent community-funded and include Vancouver Island’s largest food bank, counselling, advocacy and outreach services, a drop-in centre with a coffee shop, clothing bank, haircuts, nursing and chapel, a family centre with life skills programs and an addictions recovery program at Hope Farm Healing Centre. The Mustard Seed provides services seven days per week and relies on approximately 40 volunteers per day to serve those in need.
