October 15, 2013, VICTORIA (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes women’s basketball team will have a first look at eastern competition as Wilfrid Laurier headlines the teams visiting for this weekend’s exhibition tournament, set for Oct. 18-20 at McKinnon Gym. The Vikes will also entertain Thompson Rivers and Camosun College.
The Vikes opened their season last weekend with a pre-season test against the George Fox Bruins, who bested the Vikes 80-73 on Oct. 12. The Vikes were forced to compete without veteran forward Jessica Renfrew, while the return of Sarah Semeniuk proved impactful. The six-foot-three post led the Vikes in scoring with 19 points, while point guard Cassandra Goodis added 18. Two other Vikes hit double digits including Jenny Lewis and Shaylyn Crisp, who each chipped in with 13.
This is also the first season for former Vikes basketball player Dani Sinclair in the official head coach role after she spent last year interim in the position filling in for Rich Chambers. Also returning to the staff is assistant coach and former T-Birds stand out Leanne Evans.
This weekend the Vikes will play host to Wilfrid Laurier, who finished 11-10 last season in the West Division of the OUA, as well as Thompson Rivers, who were 15-7 in the Canada West, and Camosun College from the PacWest.
