October 16, 2013, VICTORIA (ISN) – Following a fourth-place finish at the 2013 Western Washington Classic, both Vikes women’s and men’s cross-country teams will split up as they head south of the border to compete in the Bronco and Emerald City Open races, located in Santa Clara, California and Seattle, Washington, respectively.

Head coach Brent Fougner will accompany a senior squad to California, while assistant coach Andrew Ellerton will accompany a younger contingent comprised of primarily rookies to Seattle.

“I’m not too sure what to expect heading into this weekend because we’ve never competed in these races,” says Fougner. “We know there’s a quality field out competing, it will be what our team needs before nationals next month.”

The Bronco Invitational features a six-kilometer route for the women and an eight-kilometer route for the men. Taking place at Baylands Regional Park in Sunnyvale, California, the Bronco Invitational’s terrain features low-cut grass, hard-packed dirt paths and a several short, paved sections. Due to it’s narrow features, the race limits it’s team sizes to 10 racers-per-team.

The Emerald City Open features a 2000-metre, moderately rolling course. In it’s 25th cross-country meet, this year’s race has also been classified as a “Pink Meet” to raise awareness for breast cancer awareness and research.

It will be the final competition for a majority of the Vikes before they turn their focus towards this year’s CIS cross-country Championships, Nov. 9 in London, ON.
