October 17, 2013, Monmouth, OR (ISN) – The Simon Fraser University women’s soccer team started their road trip to Oregon and Washington with a 2-0 loss on Thursday afternoon to the Western Oregon Wolves.
The Wolves scored a goal in each half to best the Clan.
“The result is frustrating because we gave a really spirited performance,” said Head Coach Shelley Howieson. “With injuries, we really had to piece together our line up and the players gave a great effort.”
The first goal, which would prove to be the game winner, came in the 37th minute after the majority of the first half was played scoreless.
Kealakekua Makekau scored it with a shot into the top right corner of the net. It was her second goal of the season.
In the second half, the home side added another when Makana Pundyke scored her eighth of the season in the 53rd minute with Taylor Higa getting the assist.
Jessica Marano (Burnaby, BC), Yva Rodriguez (Port Coquitlam, BC) and Abbey Vogt (Burnaby, BC) all registered shots for the Clan, but none found the back of the net.
Simone Tessler (Eugene, OR) started in goal for SFU, making four saves in the loss.
With the loss, the Clan’s record dips to 0-9-2 on the season, 0-7-2 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
SFU will be back in action on Saturday against the Saint Martin’s Saints at 1:00 p.m. in Lacey, WA.
