October 19, 2013, Calgary (ISN) – The Mount Royal Cougars (3-7-1) tied the first place Saskatchewan Huskies (8-3-1) 2-2 this afternoon at MR Field. Garrett Peters and Luigi Bekwayo scored for the Huskies while Trevor McPhee (PK) and Cody Cook notched the goals for the Cougars.
Mount Royal started the game hard with a few earlier scoring chances but just could not muster a shot on goal. Their pressure was all for not as the Huskies broke their momentum less than twenty minutes into the game. Garrett Peters let off a rocket past Thalheimer to make the score 1-0. The Cougars fought back and drew a penalty shot. Trevor McPhee calmly stepped up and converted it to make the score 1-1. Just when the Cougars thought that the score would hold up the Huskies scored again. Luigi Bekwayo took the feed from Brett Levis and notched the Huskies second goal. At the half the Huskies led 2-1.
The Cougars didn’t quit and the eventually tied the match. Cody Cook had a solid individual effort and then ripped a shot past the goalkeeper to make the score 2-2. The rough stuff began to pick up as both sides were warned several times for hard tackles. Neither team could add another as the score finished 2-2.
The tie eliminates the Cougars from playoff contention as their record now falls to 3-7-2 while the Huskies move closer to clinching top spot in the Prairie division with a record of 8-3-2.
These two teams will play the second half of this weekend set tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 at MR Field.
