Fraser Valley Cascades dominate CCAA Ping Golf Nationals

October 18, 2013, Quebec (ISN) – The Fraser Valley University Cascades won both the men’s and women’s team competition as well as taking 4 of the six individual medals at the 2013 Ping CCAA Golf National Championship which concluded today at Royal Quebec Golf Club.

In the men’s team competition, the team coached by Chris Bertram, who won the coach of the year award earlier in the week, won gold by shooting a combined 863, 1 under par, over the three days of the championship. Humber Hawks took silver, 12 strokes behind first place, and Camosun Chargers took bronze 6 shots behind Humber. The top Quebec school was the host team from Champlain St. Lawrence, who finished in sixth place eight shots out of the podium.

On the women’s side, Fraser Valley took gold finishing first, 24 strokes better than their closest competition, the St. Clair Saints. Humber Hawks finished in third place eight shots behind St. Clair. The top Quebec school was the John Abbott Islanders, who took seventh spot.

In the individual standings, Fraser Valley took silver and bronze in both the men’s and women’s competition. On the men’s side, Aaron Pauls won silver, while Darren Whitehouse took bronze. For the women, Jen Woods took silver while Dani Shap won bronze.

The only medals that slipped through the Cascades hands were the individual gold medals. On the men’s side, Colton Kalkanis won the title scoring a championship record 15 under par over the three days of competition. By doing so, Colton became the first golfer to successfully defend his title at this championship.

On the women’s side, it is Valerie Tanguay, from Champlain St. Lawrence, who won gold. This is Valerie’s second straight CCAA title as well. She also set a championship record with a cumulative score of 5 under par at the end of three rounds of play

The CCAA’s best golfers will be returning Quebec City next fall, as Champlain St. Lawrence will be hosting the CCAA Ping golf championship for a second year in a row from October 14 to 17, 2014.
