October 18, 2013, SHERBROOKE, Quebec (ISN) – The Trinity Western women’s basketball team won its second preseason game in a row after beating Bishop’s 74-62 Friday night in the Spartans first game at the Nike Shoot for the Cure Tournament, being held at Bishop’s.
The Spartans were led by Holly Strom (Calgary), who put up 22 points and added 10 rebounds. Janelle Traber (Abbotsford, B.C.) contributed 20 points while Laurissa Weigl (Stony Plain, Alta.) had a team-high 11 rebounds.
Bishop’s was led by Jenae Grayer, who had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
“It was a really good victory for us,” said Spartans coach Cheryl Jean-Paul. “I thought we took care of the game and played our style for about three quarters. We struggled to finish the game as strong we would have wanted to but I feel our team is showing a lot of determination in how they want the outcome of games to play out.
“Bishop’s has some very young and talented players who were able to do well in the one-on-one game. But I thought our team demonstrated the style of play that is going be productive and enable us to stay in games. We were efficient and we crashed the boards hard. We are slowly but surely becoming the program that I think we can become.”
The Spartans will now play Cape Breton Saturday at 7 p.m. and Brock Sunday at 6 p.m. to conclude the Nike Shoot for the Cure Tournament.
