October 20, 2013, VICTORIA (ISN) – Reigning Canada West Rookie of the Year Jenna Bugiardini was the hero of the match as the University of Victoria Vikes women’s basketball team took a 77-76 tilt over the visiting Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Oct. 20 at McKinnon Gym.
Bugiardini made good on the Vikes’ final six points to seal the win and totalled a game-high 28 points in 37 minutes played. The Vikes now are now 2-1 in pre-season games.
The Vikes were led in scoring by Bugiardini, whose 28 points were accompanied by seven rebounds, three assists and three buckets from beyond the arc. Guard Jenny Lewischipped in for 15, while Cassandra Goodis added 11. Lewis drained two key three pointers and was five-for-five from the line.
Following a dominating 79-58 victory on Oct. 18, the Laurier Golden Hawks came back with their home work done winning the battle the scoring battle 23-19 and 22-20 in the second and third quarters, respectively. Sarah Dillon came off the bench to score a team-high 13 points, while Alexandra Spadaro added 11.
Goodis opened the scoring for the Vikes but Laura Doyle drained the first three-point attempt of the game to put Hawks up 3-2. Bugiardini then put in a jumper and sank her shot from the line to make the three-point play and start the Vikes on a run. Back-to-back treys from Jessica Renfrew and then Bugiardini lifted the Vikes up by six and the Vikes kept on pace to end the opening frame 22-16.
In the second quarter Dillon became the answer the Golden Hawks were waiting for putting up seven points in the second frame. The Vikes did well under the hoop, rebounding and scoring in the paint with some particular good finishes from Goodis and Shaylyn Crisp to enter the half-time break with a 41-39 edge.
In the second half the teams stayed on par as the game was tied up three times including a Lee Anna Osei jumper that tied the game at 41 in the last second of the third quarter.
With 10 minutes left to go in the game and the score tied at 61, all the action was left for the end. Mid-way through the final frame the visitors took an impressive lead off a Dillon lay up but Sarah Semeniuk had one of her own to tie the game at 70, while Goodis made good on a jumper to lift the Vikes up by two. The teams continued to trade buckets but Allison Mulock fouled on Spadarao, who made good on her two shots from the line to give Laurier the three-point edge.
Almost serendipitously Spadarao then fouled Bugiardini with 37 seconds left to go. The 2013 CIS All-Rookie team member made no mistake draining both free throws and 30 seconds later closed the game with a lay up for the final 77-76 win.
