October 19, 2013, Spokane, WA (ISN) – On Saturday night at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena, the Royals went up against the Spokane Chiefs to complete a two-game road trip. Victoria gave Coleman Vollrath the start in net, while the Chiefs countered with Garret Hughson.

Victoria opened the scoring with a tally by Tyler Soy at the 7:04 mark. Logan Nelson centered the puck from the left corner before Soy knocked it into the back of the net to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. Victoria earned multiple powerplay chances in the first period, but were unable to convert. Spokanes’ Mike Aviani looked to have drawn the Chiefs even with one minute remaining, but was robbed by Vollrath’s right skate and the Royals held the 1-0 advantage after 20 minutes.

The two teams exchanged powerplay chances early in the middle frame, but both goaltenders stood tall. The Royals’ goaltender continued his strong play, but Aviani finally solved Vollrath at the 15:28 mark to tie the game. With 25 seconds left in the period, Ben Walker notched a powerplay goal to regain the lead for Victoria. Walker found a loose puck in the crease and buried it top shelf on Hughson to send the Royals into the second intermission with a 2-1 lead.

Victoria looked to clamp down defensively in the third period and limited Spokane’s scoring chances while Vollrath continued to deny the shots he faced. At the 14:42 mark, Brandon Fushimi struck to make it a two-goal game. The Thornton, CO native scored an unassisted tally when he converted a turnover into a breakaway before rifling a shot blocker side on Hughson. The Chiefs pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker and called a timeout late, but saw their best chance cast aside by Vollrath who made a big diving save with 35 seconds left in the game. Logan Fisher then added an empty net goal to seal the win for the visitors. Victoria 4 Spokane 1.

Victoria went 1/6= 16.7% on the powerplay, while Spokane went 0/2= 0.0%. The Chiefs outshot the Royals 42-29.

The Royals return home for a five-game home stand that begins Friday, October 25th against the Kelowna Rockets. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
