October 19, 2013, Victoria, BC – On a Saturday afternoon at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, the South Island Royals welcomed the Vancouver NE Chiefs for the first of two weekend contests. The Royals looked towards Chris Smith between the pipes, while the Chiefs countered with Adam Derochie.

South Island notched the game’s opening marker just before the eight minute mark of the period. Off a defensive miscue on the Vancouver NE blue line, Royals’ forward Kayden Peck broke in alone and rifled a shot over the glove of Derochie for the 1-0 lead. Less than 30 seconds later, Haydn Hopkins doubled the South Island lead. Captain Nick Guiney fed Hopkins in the slot who made a quick deke past the Chiefs’ netminder and deposited the puck into the empty net. The Royals headed into the first intermission up 2-0 with Smith turning aside all 10 shots he faced.

The Chiefs cut in to the South Island lead just after the five minute mark of the middle stanza. Forward Lucien Serban corralled a puck in the left face-off circle and snapped a quick shot short side on Smith to make it a 2-1 game. Vancouver NE knotted the contest up 2-2 just prior to the halfway mark when Ronnie Wilkie threw a puck on net from the right corner that squeaked through the Royals’ goaltender. Only minutes after their second, the Chiefs grabbed a third off a breakaway tally from Connor Burk. South Island rallied with six minutes remaining with Peck’s second of the game. From the right wing Hopkins threaded a pass through to Peck who buried the puck past the outstretched glove of Derochie. After 40 minutes of play, the Royals and Chiefs were all square 3-3.

With five minutes past in the frame, Vancouver NE were granted a powerplay as they looked to retake the lead, but it was South Island with the best chance. Duncan Cochrane sprang Hopkins in all alone, but the Royals’ forward found his backhand deke sail over the crossbar back into play. Smith and Derochie held down their respective creases for the remainder of the game as the teams finished off on even terms. Chiefs 3 Royals 3

South Island outshot Vancouver NE 40-33.

The Royals and Chiefs will conclude their two game set tomorrow morning at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Puck-drop is slated for 10:00 a.m.
