October 20, 2013, Calgary (ISN) – The Mount Royal Cougars (3-7-2) defeated the first place Saskatchewan Huskies (8-3-2) 1-0 this afternoon at MR Field. Tyrin Hutchings scored the lone goal of the game for the Cougars in the 68th minute.
After a relatively clean game yesterday the second leg of this weekend doubleheader was anything but. Both the Huskies and the Cougars went hard into every tackle and sometimes a little too carelessly. This game saw six cautions and the war of words between players and coaches from both sides escalated very quickly. The first half saw the Huskies earn the best scoring chance but Garrett Peters shot the ball just outside the post. After the first half the game remained scoreless.
For the second straight day the Cougars were awarded a penalty kick. Jordian Farahani took down the Cougar player in the box, earning himself a yellow card in the process. Tyrin Hutchings stepped up and notched his second goal of the season giving Mount Royal a 1-0 lead. After the goal the majority of time was spent in the Cougars end but Saskatchewan just could not score. After seven agonizing minutes of extra time the referee finally blew his whistle and gave the Cougars their fourth win of the season.
The Cougars now hold a record of 4-7-2 while the Huskies drop to 8-4-2 on the season.
Mount Royal will host Alberta next Saturday at 2:30pm in what will be their final home game of the season.
The Huskies will travel head to Winnipeg on Saturday to play their final game of the season.
