October 21, 2013, Fredericton (ISN) – The 2013-2014 University of PEI swimming season began in Fredericton October 18th-20th at the annual Amby Leger Invitational.
A ten swimmer squad stacked up against teams from Dalhousie, UNB, Acadia and Mount Alison. The Panthers stacked up well with several great performances and many year-to-year and lifetime bests.
At this competition points were awarded to swimmers finishing in the top 6 in each event. The Panthers nearly doubled their points from last season scoring 19 for the female squad and 21.5 for the male. (point breakdown 9-5-4-3-2-1).
“It was great to see the team score more points than last season. I really think this team is special and look forward to seeing what they can do this year, commented head coach William Calhoun. “
The top male finishes came from Joseph Sulaiman and Zachary Laustsen in the 50 Fly and 100 Fly respectively bringing home bronze medals. Sulaiman added a 6th in the 50 Freestyle and Laustsen 6th in the 200 Fly. The top female finisher was posted by Rooske Wagemakers in the 800 Free finishing 4th. She also picked up two 5th place finishes in the 200 Fly and 400 Free. Joel Legault added two UPEI school records in the 400 IM and the 1500 Freestyle.
“We have never had two male athletes bring home medals in the same meet before, said Calhoun.” Team Captain Suzanne Nicholson added “We had an awesome meet this weekend, amazing results and we are going to keep getting better! Our hard work is really paying off. “
The team will now get back to training to prepare for the Dalhousie Invitational held November 15th-17th.
