October 20, 2013, SHERBROOKE, Quebec (ISN) – The Trinity Western women’s basketball team finished the Nike Shoot for the Cure Tournament with a 2-1 record after beating Cape Breton 65-62 Sunday morning at Bishop’s University.
After being down by nine points at halftime, the Spartans rallied over the final 20 minutes to earn the three-point win. The Spartans are now 3-2 in preseason play.
Janelle Traber (Abbotsford, B.C.) was the Spartans leading scorer with 23 points while also adding six rebounds and five assists. Holly Strom (Calgary) added 17 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots.
Rasheeka Gunn led Cape Breton in scoring with 18 points.
“I thought this whole trip was a great experience for our team,” said Spartans coach Cheryl Jean-Paul. “We played three tough teams and Cape Breton was no exception. I really thought a lot of people stepped up today and it was a really good step forward after yesterday’s loss (against Brock).
“I felt the team came out extremely strong in the third quarter. We played hard on both sides of the ball. Even though we struggled to finish the game, I think there are positive signs of things we can focus on to do a better job of finishing out wins. To have three CIS wins at this point in the season is a really positive sign and I’m really looking forward to seeing what the next few weeks bring us.”
The Spartans will wrap up their preseason schedule with games at home against Warner Pacific Oct. 25 at 4 p.m. and UBC Okanagan Oct. 26 at 2 p.m.
They open the regular season Nov. 1-2 when they will host Calgary and Lethbridge.
