(VERSION FRANÇAISE CI-DESSOUS)

OTTAWA (CIS) – Four varsity sports teams from McGill University are listed in CIS national Top 10 rankings. The newest addition is the hockey Redmen, who are off to a 3-0-1 start and finally cracked the Top 10, slotted in to the No. 6 spot.

The hockey Martlets will open their regular season this weekend as the No.2-ranked team in the nation. The rugby Martlets, who defeated Ottawa 27-17 in a Quebec semifinal last week, are ranked No. 6. The cross-country Martlets did not compete last week and remain at No. 9.

The University of Alberta leads the way in three sports listed at No.1, including men’s hockey, women’s rugby and men’s volleyball.

In football, the Western Mustangs top the rankings for the fourth consecutive week following a record-breaking performance which allowed them to wrap up the regular season with an unblemished 8-0 mark for the first time since 1998.

Western (8-0) and the second-ranked Laval Rouge et Or (7-0) once again received 20 and 10 first-place votes from the Football Reporters of Canada panel, respectively, with the Mustangs earning 290 total points in the media poll compared to 279 for the reigning Vanier Cup champions.

In other sports, Guelph (women’s & men’s cross country), Montreal (women’s hockey), Ottawa (women’s soccer) and UBC (men’s soccer & women’s volleyball) all maintain their No. 1 status.

The first basketball rankings of the season will be released next Tuesday.
