October 23, 2013 (ISN) – There have been coaches who have banned player names on the back of jerseys so as not to promote individuality. Sometimes, players aren’t even allowed to tuck their jerseys in or wear different-coloured laces or grow long hair of have facial hair.

But there’s one place in hockey that is still a sacred space for individual artistic expression: the goalie mask.

I wrote a story in the spring about how the OHL has the most beautiful jerseys in hockey: http://hockeynow.ca/major-junior/43588-7-superb-sweaters-ohl-has-best-jerseys-in-the-world

Well, as the 2013/14 season has started to kick-in to high gear, I’ve noticed that the OHL has some pretty magnificent masks, too.

Here’s my vote for the Top 3.

1. Daniel Altshuller of the Oshawa Generals has the advantage of having one of the most beautiful hockey-colour-palettes to work with. And his mask delivers. A complicated mask often looks good on a simple jersey. The straight lines work well with the big logo on the side. And kudos for paying homage to the history of one of Junior hockey’s most storied franchises. 2. Alex Fotinos of the Barrie Colts makes use of what is already a pretty sweet Colts logo and goes big and bold with it. I love how he takes the blue – which is not a primary team colour, normally – and makes it dominant in his colour scheme. How do the kids say it, these days—it just ‘pops.’ (Terry Wilson / OHL Images photo) – See more at: http://hockeynow.ca/major-junior/beautiful-buckets-the-3-best-looking-ohl-goalie-masks#sthash.JXZ1zbct.dpuf

3. Jack Moylan of the Kitchener Rangers gives a fresh take on the over-used Superman theme—it’s less about the logo and more about the eyes; which makes sense, because goalies need that laser x-ray vision to see speeding pucks. He goes big and confident with the classic team logo on the side and brings a nice touch with a streak of logs right down the middle—why not make use of a beautiful logo?
