Men’s golf finish fourth at San Marcos Fall Classic

October 23, 2013, VICTORIA (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes shot their best round Tuesday afternoon, shooting 293, 5-over par to finish the tournament in fourth place. Third-year Vike Eric Praught led the Vikes individually, matching his round one score of 5-over, 72 to finish the tournament with a total score of 219, ninth-place overall.

Following the first day of play, the Vikes found themselves in fifth place, with Praught and Sean Hay leading the charge for the Vikes. Players battled fatigue, difficult pin positioning and weather but managed to shoot a 299, 11-over par to keep them within distance of second-place Master’s College.

Fog delayed Tuesday’s tee-off for an hour before sun reappeared for the final day of play. Hay carried his consistent shooting into the third round, posting a 74, 7-over score for a total score of 221, good for 12th place in the tournament. Vikes Alex Cartwright, Bruce Tomie and Jamie Cartwright shot final round scores of 73, 74, 84, respectivley. University of Redlands ran away with their first-place, posting a final score of -11, 30 strokes clear of second-place Master’s College. UCLA’s Preston Valder held his ground in first-place through the final round, finishing at -11, one stroke ahead of Redland’s Bobby Holden to win the individual title.

“I was very pleased with how our team played today,” said interim head coach Justin Clews. “Ultimately when you go into the final round of a tournament you want to gain ground. The face that we gained a spot from fourth to fifth was a success.”

It was the final tournament of the year for the men’s team, who will next see action Feb. 2-4 at the Cougar Invitational in San Diego, Calif. The women’s team will play their final tournament of the year when they head to Hilo, HI, Oct. 28-29 to play in the University of Hawaii at Hilo Invitational.
