October 24, 2013, VICTORIA (ISN) – A small contingent of Vikes will compete in the Provincial Cross Country Championships, October 26 in Abbotsford, B.C.
The five-athlete roster, comprised of first-year Vikes, will be competing for spots on the B.C. provincial team roster that will compete in national cross-country championships, Nov. 30 in Vancouver. Because it’s a provincial club championship and not a CIS event, the Vikes will compete under the banner of University of Victoria Track Club.
Benjamin Weir will be the Vike to watch this weekend. The freshman was impressive in the Vikes season-opening race at the Charles Bowles Invitational, finishing 14th overall with a time of 25:08.61, followed closely in 16th by Vike Thomas Getty, who posted a time of 25:11.41. Weir was also the top Vike at the Oct. 19 Emerald City Open, where he and Getty finished fifth and sixth with times of 25:48.0 and 25.51.5, respectivley.
“Our team will be competing against other juniors,” said head coach Brent Fougner. “Some of the other juniors are a year older than our team is, so they will be up against some good competition. All of our team is really fit though, they are ready to go.”
Following a double-header weekend that saw the Vikes competing in both Emerald City Open and Bronco Invitational events, the majority of the Vikes cross-country roster will remain in Victoria to train and prepare for the CIS Cross-Country national championships, taking place Nov. 9.
This weekend’s championships take place October 26 at Clearbrook Park, Abbotsford, B.C.
