October 27, 2013, Parksville, BC (ISN) – Saanich Brave goaltender Matt Rud made 26 saves to lead the Braves to a 2-0 win over the Oceanside Generals in VIJHL action Saturday night at Oceanside Place in Parksville.
The game was a penalty filled affair that saw 229 minutes in penaties in total handed out to both teams, the bulk of which came during a melee at the 17:54 mark of the third period that saw Oceanside’s Carl Provencher alone assessed with a double-major for fighting, a major match penalty, a double 10-minute misconduct and a 2 minute instigator penalty. In that same tussle, Brave newcomer Dayne Ellison was assessed a double minor for leaving the bench, a 5-minute major for fighting and a double 10-minute misconduct.
On the hockey side of things, the Braves would get second period goals from Ellison (his first as a Brave) and Sam McMullen (his 8th on the season) to complete all the scoring that was needed in this one.
Rud, who has now backstopped the Braves to two consecutive wins, would be named first star for his efforts. Oceanside’s Evgueni Makarski stopped 23 of 25 shots in the losing effort.
The win moves the Braves to a record of 7-8-1-0 and they move 2 points up on Kerry Park for fourth in the South Division. The Generals, who appear to be the VIJHL “whipping boy” this season, fall to a dismal 2-15-1-0 o the year and sit in last in the North.
Next action for the Braves is this Friday, November 1, when the Braves host Comox Valley at Pearkes Arena. Game time is 6:30 pm.
