October 26, 2013, Nanaimo, BC (ISN) – After a five year absence, the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men’s soccer team is making a return to the National championships.
The WolfPack downed the host Vancouver Island University Mariners 2-1 to win the PACWEST semi final Saturday (Oct 26) afternoon in Nanaimo. The win not only gives TRU a spot in Sunday’s (Oct 27) final against the Douglas College Royals, but both teams get to go to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association championships in New Brunswick. That is because the PACWEST gets two berths.
” It was sort of a weird match,” said WolfPack co head coach Sean Wallace about the semi final.
TRU opened the scoring in the first 10 minutes. One of VIU’s defenders played the ball back to his goalie. But Jacob Kaay (4th year, forward, Kamloops, BC) intercepted the ball and put it in the back of the net to give the WolfPack a lead that they carried into half time.
Three minutes into the second half, Nolan Wallace (2nd year, defender, Kamloops, BC) played a high ball which went over the defenders head and wound up on the foot of his brother—PACWEST player of the year and first team all-star, Justin (4th year, midfield, Kamloops, BC).
Justin Wallace kept his balance and played it square to Dion Gouldsborough (2nd year, forward, Summerland, BC) to make it 2-0.
VIU pressed the WolfPack after that and scored to make it 2-1.
“We had a number of chances to score,” Wallace added. “But couldn’t get another one in.”
The WolfPack and Douglas will play Sunday at 3:30 pm at Mariner Field. The game is expected to be webcast by logging onto : http://www.pacwestbc.ca/soccer2013/
The CCAA Nationals are set from November 6-9 th in St. John, New Brunswick.
