Women’s rowing, eight races to first-place finish at Head of the Gorge

October 27, 2013, VICTORIA (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s and women’s rowing teams hosted and competed in the annual Head of the Gorge and the Head of the Elk, Oct. 26 and 27.

UVic’s women crews were victorious in the varsity eights at Head of the Gorge, while Sunday’s Head of the Elk saw the women finishing second in the eights behind Edmonton Rowing Club.

“Yesterday was a new format for the event,” said women’s head coach Rick Crawley. “All the feedback from everybody was that it was a great site and a great course.”

Against the current, UVic’s women matched their male counterparts, earning a first-place victory with a time of 13.44.3. UVic’s junior women’s varsity eight crew finished fourth behind their varsity teammates with a time 14:42. The women’s novice eight crew also posted strong results, finishing 10-seconds ahead of rival UBC with a time of 16:17.5. Injured Vike Emily Garry sat out once again in the weekend’s events as the women’s pair finished second with a time of 15:29.2.

“I’m pleased with our performance levels” said Crawley. “The weather was awesome, the new site was great, I’m pleased with how we are going as a team, everyone is coming along.”

Racing only two boats Sunday, the women’s eight finished second behind Edmonton Rowing Club with a time of 27:36.4, while the women’s novice eight beat out the University of Alberta with a time of 31:24.2.

The Vikes women’s rowing team will now turn their focus towards this year’s Canadian University Rowing Championships, taking place Nov. 2-3 in Montreal, Que.
