October 29, 2013, VICTORIA (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes Varsity Council has announced their October 2013 winners for Original Joe’s athletes and team of the month. All winners will be presented a gift certificate to Original Joe’s.

Athlete of the Month – Brynn Tomie, women’s soccer

Fourth-year Vike and women’s golf team captain Brynn Tomie has been named the Original Joe’s Athlete of the Month for October. The Bedford, Nova Scotia native led the Vikes in three of four tournaments this season, posting her best finish at the annual Vikes Shootout. The Vikes women opened up their season at the Cavalier Invitational, where Tomie finished in fourth place with a three-round score of 17-over, 233. The Vikes then headed to the Saint Martin’s Invitational where Tomie was the sole Vike to place in the top-10, finishing eighth overall. Facing a quick turnaround, the Vikes headed to the Vikings Invitational just three days after competing at Saint Martin’s. Tomie once again led her squad in individual scoring with another eighth-place finish. Tomie’s most recent tournament saw her capture the Vikes third-straight women’s title for the Vikes, following back-to-back wins by Megan Woodland.

Athlete of the Month – Ryan Cassidy, Men’s cross-country

Third-year Vike Ryan Cassidy’s performances this season have earned him Original Joe’s Athlete of the Month for October. The 2012 Canada West First Team All-Star has had an impressive 2013 campaign, finishing first among individual racers in the season-opening Charles Bowles Invitational with a total time of 24:17.81. Cassidy’s time helped the Vikes earn first place overall as a team. The Vikes then earned their second first-place finish of the season at the Bronco Invitational, where Cassidy once again led the Vikes with a third-place finish among racers, posting a time of 23:52.6. Cassidy is no stranger to success; finishing 10th overall at last year’s CIS National Championships. The Grand-Digue, New Brunswick native was also named Canada West Cross-country Rookie of the Year, along with a Canada West First-team All-Star selection in his freshman season.

Team of the Month – Women’s soccer

The University of Victoria Vikes women’s soccer team has been named the Original Joe’s Team of the Month for October, following a regular season that saw them finishing as the top-seed overall after a wild end to the Canada West regular season, earning them home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Led by fifth-year captain Jackie Harrison and 2012 Canada West goal-scoring leader Emma Greig, the Vikes went on a seven game winning streak to close out the season, fiinishing third in Canada West scoring with 29 goals on the season while allowing only eight against. Harrison and Cassie Dennis’ two-goal performances in the Oct. 25 win over the Regina Cougars have left the Vikes with only one more win needed to secure a CIS Championship berth. The Vikes will host the Canada West Final Four playoffs, Nov. 1-2 at Centennial Stadium.
