November 7, 2013 (ISN) – Canada won its first match at the NORCECA Final Four men’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday evening in Monterrey, Mexico. The team – comprised of athletes currently training at the national team centre in Gatineau – beat Venezuela 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-18).

Canada’s top scorers were Chris Voth of Winnipeg, MB, with 10 kills and one ace, and team veteran Steve Brinkman (Bowmanville, ON) with eight kills, one block and one ace. Albertan Steve Gotch had six kills, two blocks and an ace.

The competition involves Canada, Dominican Republic, Venezuela and host Mexico, competing in round-robin format until Nov. 08 to determine the finals that take place on Saturday, November 9.

”This match was the first international match for many of our players,” said coach Vincent Pichette. “Guys had to manage their nerves in the first two sets – we committed many unforced errors on serving and attacking.”

And it ended well for Canada: “The guys settled down and went back to basics in the third set, which allowed us to be more efficient. We’ll be looking to improve against Dominican Republic… this will be a tougher challenge against experienced players.”

Today’s game for Canada is at 5 pm local time, and then Friday the team plays host Mexico at 7 pm local time. This is the first event of its kind, organized by the NORCECA Volleyball Confederation and the Pan American Volleyball, and held in Gymnasium Nuevo Leon Unido of the city of Monterrey.
