November 8, 2013 Monterrey, Mexico (ISN) – Canada’s volleyball team at the Men’s Final Four Cup in Monterrey, Mexico, lost last night to the Dominican Republic in straight sets 25-22, 25-22, 25-21.

Canada now faces Mexico on Friday. The Canadians began to take charge in the first set, but the Dominicans tied the action at 20 and from there on became unstoppable. Both teams now have a 1-1 win-loss record.

Canada’s coach Vincent Pichette said that direct mistakes cost Canada the match: “Dominican Republic has experienced players and we need our young ones to gain confidence against teams of this calibre.”

Dominican Republic held a huge advantage in service points by 10-4 while the other categories weren’t significant with difference of only one point for the winners: spikes (38-37) and blocks (9-8).

The top scorer of the match was Pedro Luis Garcia of Dominican Republic with 18 points, including 4 aces, helped by Omar Tapia with 16 points and Elnis Palomino with 13 points. For the Canadian side, Steve Brinkman (Bowmanville, ON) produced eight points, joined by Jeremie Lortie of Ottawa also with eight points.

Dominican Republic’s captain, Gerardo Aquino, said: “The score was very close but we came out to win after yesterday’s loss (against Mexico). With our strong serves we were able to find Canada’s flaws making it easier for us to block and attack better.”

Canada’s captain, Justin Boudreault, admitted his team’s game plan failed. “We didn’t apply what we practiced, and we couldn’t react but in the end it’s a learning experience and we must come stronger against Mexico,” he said.

Canada’s team is made up of players from its men’s national training centre, based in Gatineau, Quebec. Tonight at 7pm local (8 pm Eastern) they take on Mexico – a team that has not yet lost in this tournament.
