November 8, 2013, LANGLEY, British Columbia (ISN) – The Trinity Western men’s hockey team gave up four first period goals and never recovered as it lost 6-1 to visiting Selkirk Friday at the Langley Events Centre.
The Saints (6-2) scored two goals in the first five minutes and that proved to be all they would need as they cruised to a five-goal victory over TWU (5-3).
“We need to stop spotting teams those first period leads,” said Spartans coach Barret Kropf. “After that first period, it was only a 2-1 game, so there are certainly things to build on. But this first period stuff is just not acceptable.”
“There are a few guys who played well – particularly I think of guys like Trevor Beaupre (New Westminster, B.C.) and Blair Murphy (Surrey, B.C.) – but for tomorrow we need to regroup and figure out a way to play a full 60-minute game.”
The Spartans and Saints will be back on the ice at 2 p.m. at the LEC.
Selkirk’s Mason Spear opened the scoring 3:12 into the game and then Darnell Dyck, who had a hat-trick the last time these two teams met, tallied just inside the first five minutes.
Cody Fidgett and Connor McLaughlin then rounded out the first period scoring, giving Selkirk a 4-0 lead.
Late in the second period, the Spartans JP Villeneuve (Georgetown, Ont.) scored an unassisted marker on a quick wrist shot from in tight for his team-leading fourth goal of the season, but that was it for the TWU offence.
Selkirk sealed the win with third period goals from Fidgett and Marcus McCrea.
The Saints had 12 different players earn at least a point.
Spartans goalie Harry Fredeman (Ladner, B.C.) made 36 saves in the loss while Selkirk netminder Chris Hurry stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced.
Including last Saturday’s 6-0 loss to Selkirk in Castlegar, B.C., the Spartans have now been outscored 12-1 in two regular season games with the Saints. All told, including two exhibition games, TWU is 0-4 against Selkirk this year and has been outscored 21-2.
Game Notes: TWU started the game playing without Dan Stollery (Camrose, Alta.) and Micah Cockrill (Chilliwack, B.C.) and lost both Sam Gemmell (Danville, Cali.) and Chris Hirano (San Jose, Cali.) to injuries early in the contest…TWU forward Josh Stephenson (Aldergrove, B.C.) played his first game of the season coming off an injury but was forced to fill in on the blue line…the Spartans were outshot 17-4 in both the first and third periods…in the second period TWU had a 12-8 advantage in shots.
