November 10, 2013 (ISN) – Although the Canadians lost their last game yesterday at the Men’s Final Four Volleyball Cup in Mexico, it was learning experience for the training centre athletes.
“This tournament was a very good opportunity to provide exposure at the international level for our group,” said Canada’s coach Vincent Pichette. “Skill-wise there is much to work on and we’re taking home a lot of information to evaluate.”
In Saturday’s game, Venezuela defeated Canada in straight sets 25-22, 25-19, 25-19. After losing to Canada in the opening match on Wednesday, highly motivated Venezuela was better offensively with a 42-30 advantage, and also in aces by 5-2 in this match. They broke even in the blocking area and unforced errors by 9 and 19 respectively. Luis Arias was the top scorer with 13 points for Venezuela, accompanied by Carlos Paez, Hector Salerno and Daniel Escobar with 10 points each. Canada’s Jeremie Lortie of Ottawa finished with 10 points.
“Venezuela was in better condition and playing well in defense. We had our opportunities, but could not capitalize on transition,” said Pichette.
Overall, Steve Marshall of Abbotsford, BC, was named “best digger” at this tournament.
The Canadian athletes will resume training on November 18 at their full-time centre in Gatineau, Que.
Mexico is the champion of the Men’s Final Four Cup after a 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-17) victory over Dominican Republic at Nuevo Leon Unido Gym in Monterrey on Saturday. With the win over Canada, Venezuela picked up bronze.
