Royals knock off Winterhawks

November 9, 2013, Portland OR (ISN) – In a Saturday night contest at the Moda Center, the Victoria Royals went up against the Portland Winterhawks to wrap up their two-game road trip. The Royals gave Coleman Vollrath the start in goal for the second consecutive night, while Portland went with Brendan Burke.

Austin Carroll opened the scoring for the Royals 25 seconds in the game. The puck was dislodged from the back of the Portland net and squirted out front before the Royals’ forward spun off a check and slid the puck under the left pad of Burke to give Victoria a quick 1-0 lead. Taylor Leier quickly replied at 2:01 to tie the game. At the 6:52 mark, Brandon Magee out-waited a Winterhawks’ forward in the high slot and snapped a shot to the top right corner of the net to regain the lead for the Royals. Recently acquired Victoria native Jack Palmer also recorded his first assist in a Royals’ uniform on Magee’s powerplay goal. Victoria ended the period with an impressive penalty kill and held a 2-1 advantage after 20 minutes of play.

Portland applied pressure early in the second period, but Vollrath stood tall before he came up with a flashy glove save at the 12:47 mark to keep the Royals’ lead intact. Late in the frame, Victoria’s goaltender made several more key saves which kept the Winterhawks off the board in the period and the Royals headed to the dressing room with a 2-1 lead.

Austin Carroll had a great opportunity to extend the Victoria’s lead at the 3:47 mark when Logan Nelson sent a cross-crease the open winger, but Carroll was denied by the right pad of Burke. Vollrath continued to impress, but Oliver Bjorkstrand tied the game for the Winterhawks off of a broken play at the 14:14 mark of the period. The Royals weathered a furious Portland attack late in the game and overtime was needed to determine a winner.

Just 31 seconds into overtime, Magee put the game away with his fourth goal in two games. The Edmonton, AB native cut from the left wing to the slot and snapped a shot blocker side on Burke to give the Royals their second win of a two-game road trip. Victoria 3 Portland 2.

Victoria went 1/3=33.3% on the powerplay, while Portland went 0/4=0.0%. The Winterhawks outshot the Royals 43-36.

The Royals now return to Vancouver Island to host the Seattle Thunderbirds at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre for a two-game set which begins next Friday. Puck drop is scheduled 7:05 p.m. on Friday night.
