November 12, 2013, VICTORIA (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes women’s basketball team is pleased to announce the commitment of Kamloops, B.C. native Anna Frenkel for the 2014-15 season.
The five-foot-ten guard-forward has already enjoyed an incredibly successful high school career prior to her senior year with South Kamloops Secondary. The 17-year-old was selected a first-team all-star in both grade nine and ten and will join the Vikes as a three-time AAA provincial champion.
“We are very excited about Anna’s commitment to our basketball program,” said Vikes women’s head coach Dani Sinclair. “Anna is a tremendous athlete and has been a key member of a great South Kamloops team that has won back-to-back Provincial Championships. She is a fierce competitor who knows how to win. She will add a great level of experience and toughness to our team.”
Frenkel helped South Kamloops qualify for AAA provincial finals in every year she played. The team won the AAA High School Girls titles in her senior years, in 2012 and 2013 and finished second at provincials in 2010 and 2011.
She was selected to the Western Canada Games basketball roster in 2012, where Team B.C. captured gold and Frenkel was awarded the Athlete Community Excellence award, presented to Team B.C. athletes who apply the leadership skills acquired in their respective sports towards initiatives that benefit their communities.
Frenkel’s basketball roots trace back to grade six, where she began playing with friends before joining the YMCA-YWCA Steve Nash basketball camp. Her athletic abilities also extend beyond the court to track, where she was involved in the 100-metre and 200-metre distances until last year.
The all-round athlete will hit the court with the Vikes women’s basketball program in the 2014-15 basketball season.
