November 13, 2013 (ISN) – The women had a surprise loss Saturday to UVic, though I haven’t been able to find the score. The Academy had a successful road trip, winning out over Comox 36-22. At home Sunday, the 3rds beat Powell River 38-6. The Valhallians had the weekend off.

Coming Up

The Valhallians and 3rds both travel to Cowichan Saturday for a double header (1pm and 2:30pm). Both squads are currently tied in the standings with the Piggies, so we should see some entertaining rugby. The Academy has the weekend off, and the women are headed to Vancouver for a match against Capilano.

3rd Div Report

The Velox Thirds continued their undefeated season Sunday with a solid 38 – 6 win over a game and gritty Powell River Otago squad. Powell River, with 4 CW imports had a solid 17, with our 17, some real depth was shown here on a Sunday afternoon. With the player, coach and trainer numbers significantly out-numbering the fan base, we kicked off on a cloudy and crisp fall afternoon.

The Otago opened the scoring and had a 3-0 lead for a solid five minutes, before Rob Carr made like his own Solo-Flex commercial and ran through people at will. After a couple first half tries, and the 4th muttering of “that’s no third div player”, Robbie came off at the half. Powell River came to play and ran hard at some soft VV defense.

Coach Vath, aka Baggage on tour explicitly vented his frustration at this on the VV sidelines.

Richie Dark started the game on the bench, self pulling himself as a result of being hung over. Older brother Jamie drank two beers in the parking lot, showing young grasshopper Richie how to solve that problem. Credits to New Guy Nigel, down from the hinterlands of Smithers for showing up and notching at least one try, Rob, Academy coach for stepping up and reffing the game, Dave Jack for winning the coveted chain. Best of luck to Jake who unfortunately tore his Achilles in the game.

Next up, Cowichan away SATURDAY at 1:00.
